Instead of Air,
the Earth

Solo Exhibition, Beit Habe’er Gallery, Jaffa, 2020

During a contemplative stroll on Jaffa beach, Yasmin stumbled upon fragments of old bricks strewn along the shore. Over time, their interaction with the sea transformed them into ‘pebble-bricks’ – a poignant symbol of the buried past. These bricks were remnants of the Palestinian neighborhood of Manshiaa, concealed in the subterranean and within the collective memory of Israeli society, yet unable to be erased completely.

Consolidated with this realization, Yasmin began seeking and excavating those very “refugees,” intending to bring them back to light and revile the pieces back to the surface from under the planted grass. By delving into the concealed and obscured, this exhibition offers a unique opportunity for visitors to explore what lies beneath, both physically and mentally. It encourages them to construct a new understanding of the present for themselves through these hidden elements.
